Introduction to Kayaking (Full Day)

  • Are you new to kayaking completely, or considering kayaking as a new sport for yourself and / or family? This class is for you! We will cover all the nuts bolts of kayaking, both on the water and off the water. You will become familiar with the different types, and shapes of kayaks, learn how to properly and safely transport your kayak, understand the differences in paddle blades and their affects on the water and you, understand safety on the water, proper entry and exit in your boat, and basic paddling techniques that will help you control your kayak. This class is designed to be informative and fun. We will utilize and practice our knowledge on a short group tour.

Kayak Basics  (3HRS) - $55 per person

  • This fun 3 hour class is designed for the beginner or experienced kayaker who wants to learn the basics of kayak control. You will learn the basics of moving forward, backward, turning and stopping in an efficient manner through instruction and practice. Once the basics are covered, the class will take a small tour of the pond to help reinforce and refine these newly developed skills.

Beyond the Basics  (3HRS) - $55 per person

  • This fun 3 hour class is for the kayaker who knows the basics and wants to expand their skill set. We will be covering the J-lean for proper body positioning, high and low braces to help keep you from taking a swim and the draw and sculling draw strokes to move your kayak sideways. If there is time we will cover the low brace turn on the move.

Rescue Basics  (3HRS) - $55 per person

  • Yes, your are going to get wet in this class! I have found that there are many kayakers who have never capsized their kayak, and they have never even thought of how to get back in! Water depth and how far you are away from land can disrupt an enjoyable kayak trip. In this class, you will learn how to safely exit your kayak in case of capsize, complete a self rescue (re-enter on your own) and complete several types of assisted rescues (re-enter your kayak with the help of another kayaker).

Basic Paddling  (Evening) - $25 per person

  • This class is designed as an introductory class to paddling. The focus will be on introducing kayaking as a sport, safety on the water and a proper forward stroke. Whether you are new or experienced, come out to this class and enjoy a short week night paddle around Lum’s Pond in the last hours of daylight! We may even catch a beautiful sunset!
